If you would like to know how to become a registered nurse, then you have come to the right place! I want to share with you different programs out there, degrees, and requirements. I would like to discuss several pathways that are available to you along with the recommended pathways for several different kinds of students or those that are changing careers. Don’t worry because no work experience is required prior to becoming a nurse. Most programs aren’t very much money with a rewarding salary that will pay for the education program within the first few months of working! Let me share with you different types of people that may want to become a registered nurse with a suggested path to follow.
Are you a high school student or someone that has never attended college that wants to become a nurse? Options include enrolling in an associates in science degree in nursing or enrolling in a bachelors program. Regardless of which option you chose, you will most likely need the same educational prerequisites. One of my posts goes into detail about this topic. First identify the school or schools you would like to enroll in. I suggest finding at least three schools for backup. Right now most schools may have a waiting list with a required nursing entrance test (NET) that needs to be taken prior to applying.
Are you a licensed practical nurse and want to know how to become a registered nurse? Many popular educational programs available include the LPN to RN bridge programs (I have a post on this topic for more details). Unfortunately many hospitals are trying to avoid hiring licensed practical nurses. The good nurse that in response to this, there are more bridge program available now. The organization you are working for most likely grandfathered you in as a licensed practical nurse and has stopped hiring them. If you speak to your employer about becoming a registered nurse, they will most likely want to support you financially. Tuition assistance is offered by most organizations.
Are you like me and has gone through college and wants to know how to become a registered nurse? Don’t be discouraged or upset if you have received a degree or several already and have now decided to change paths and become a registered nurse. Options include an accelerated second bachelors degree or enrolling in an associates in science degree In nursing program. You may need to go back and take several undergraduate courses for which ever program you chose. If you are confused about doing an associate in science degree or a second bachelors degree program then take a look at the length of the program and the cost. Currently to sit for the registered nurse licensing exam, you can either have completed an associate in science degree or a bachelors degree in nursing.
