Bachelor Of Science In Nursing

As mentioned in my other post, eligibility requirements to sit for the registered nurse licensing exam includes being a graduate of either an associates degree in nursing or a bachelor of science in nursing. If my other post I went into quite some detail regarding an associates degree in nursing. The purpose of this post is to discuss in greater detail about obtaining a bachelor of science in nursing.

Currently there are quite a few options available for those wishing to obtain a bachelors of science in nursing. One option is to first obtain an associates degree in nursing and then proceed to obtain a bachelors degree in nursing. This may be referred to many schools as the bachelors of science in nursing for registered nurses. Most of these programs may be an accelerated one year program that can be completed online to fit ones work schedule. Most registered nurses will work three twelve hours shifts per week, be considered full time and either go to class or take online classes. This degree can help prepare the registered nurse to become a teacher, manager or a community health nurse.

Another bachelor of science in nursing program offered by mainly universities is one for those wishing to become a registered nurse that has received an associates degree and has completed the appropriate pre-nursing courses as determined by the program. This program may last two years if taking classes full time. The graduates of this program are then eligible to sit for the registered nurse licensing exam. Some classes may be online while most will involve clinical nursing courses just like those in the associates degree in nursing program. Like the other bachelors degree in nurses, students are prepared to not only be registered nurses, but have had courses that could prepare them to be teachers or managers.

Another option to obtaining a bachelor of science in nursing is the accelerated second bachelors degree track. These programs are being offered by many universities in efforts to decrease the nursing shortage and help those with other degree and careers change paths and become a nurse. This option has become very popular and appealing to those that may already have obtained a bachelors and even a masters. Some program even offer the option of taking a graduate degree course in place of a bachelors degree course. This program can be completed usually in about a year or a year and a half. Those wishing to go on to pursue a masters of science in nursing have more of an easier time transitioning with this track.

To conclude our discussion on the bachelor of science in nursing, we find there are quite a bit of options for those wishing to become a registered nurse. Right now there is a great shortage of nurses out there. Many hospitals are offering loan forgiveness programs and tuition assistant to those thinking about pursuing a career in nurses. Take your time to check out the different programs available if you want to become a nurse. Look at the tuition, and also think about your short term and long term goals.
